Add a tree to the map
Every tree on your course starts as a pin on the map. Placing one is quick: quick-add copies details from a tree you already have, or the advanced form starts fresh with the built-in species search. Both begin with a pin.
Place the pin
Section titled “Place the pin”-
Open the Trees section.
-
Click Add tree to the map (the + button) on the toolbar.
-
Your cursor becomes a crosshair with live coordinates, and a toast reminds you: “Click the map to place a tree. Press Esc to cancel.”
-
Click the spot where the tree stands. The “Add a tree” window opens.
-
Switch to the Trees section and tap Add.
-
“Tap the map to place the tree.” Tap the spot, or stand at the trunk and use your current location.
-
Check the preview. “Are you happy with this location? Tap again to adjust, then hit proceed.” Tap the map to nudge the pin.
-
Tap Proceed to add tree. The “Add a tree” sheet opens with your spot marked “Location locked”. Wrong spot? Tap Change.
The quick way
Section titled “The quick way”The “Add a tree” window does the typing for you: “Choose a species already on your map, then pick the closest matching tree to prefill details.”
-
Under “Step 1: choose a species”, every species on your map is listed with its marker color and tree count. Hit Choose on the right one.
-
“Pick a similar tree” shows your existing trees of that species. Hit Use on the closest match.
-
The advanced form opens prefilled from that tree: “You can edit any field before creating.” Fix what’s different, then create.
In a hurry? Add blank to map drops the tree at your pin with no details. Fill it in later.
First tree on the property? The quick list tells you: “Add at least one tree to unlock quick selections. Use the advanced form to get started.” Hit Advanced form.
The advanced form
Section titled “The advanced form”Three steps: “Tree Details”, “Marker Style”, then the review.
-
Pick the Species. It’s required. Type in the search box (“Search by common or scientific name”) and pick a match; the species details auto-fill. Missing one? Hit “Can’t find your tree?” then Submit feedback, and we’ll add it for you.
-
Pick the marker color. New species get preset swatches plus a Custom picker (color sliders on mobile). One color per species across your property. A species already on your map keeps its color, shown locked as “Current color selected” (“Species color selected” on mobile); hit Change only if you want a new one.
-
Fill in the review. Web calls it “Location & Review”, mobile just “Review”, and every field is required: “Display Name”, the coordinates (prefilled from your pin, still editable), “Tree age (years)” (“Use an estimate if you don’t know the exact age.”), Input units (Metric or Imperial), Condition, Notes, height, DBH, canopy diameter, root zone radius, “Risk level”, and “Risk radius”.
-
Click Create Tree (Create tree on mobile). The marker lands on the map for the whole team.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Place the pin carefully. Trees can’t be moved later; fixing a spot means deleting and re-adding.
- Condition and risk feed the score and the map filters, so honest values pay off.
- Every species gets one marker color across your property, so if a color is already taken, you’ll be asked to pick another.
If something’s not working
Section titled “If something’s not working”If you can’t add trees, placement is Owners and Management only. If Create Tree won’t light up, you’re missing a required review field, usually the metric/imperial units. Anything else, email us at support@turfile.com.
Related
Section titled “Related”- The tree panel: renames, species swaps, inspections, and everything else once the tree’s on the map.
- Filter the map: once you’ve got a canopy to sort through.
